On 10 March 2017, Mr Runov, IRU Under-Secretary General and GPST Executive Secretary, took part in the launch of the first FIA/JCDecaux Global Road Safety Campaign “3500 Lives” on the invitation of Mr Jean Todt, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Road Safety and FIA President. According to Mr Jean Todt, “Too many people lose their life unnecessarily in road crashes daily.” Through a concrete and positive approach, the “3500 Lives” campaign (www.fia.com/3500lives
) aims to raise awareness and prompt all road users to adopt simple, easily applicable and efficient rules.
During follow up bilateral consultations, Mr Igor Runov expressed his gratitude to Mr Jean Todt for his active participation in the Ashgabat Sustainable Transport Conference and Business Summit and congratulated FIA and JCDecaux for launching a successful start of the global outdoor campaign to save people’s lives. A number of important issues relating to road safety were discussed in the context of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the draft Ashgabat Programme of Action for Sustainable Transport. The Parties acknowledged the positive role played by IRU and its Academy in the promotion of international standards in road safety and security, as underlined in the latest UN GA Resolution on Road Safety 70/260 “Improving global road safety”. Mr Todt expressed his appreciation of GPST and IRU contributions to the work of the High Level Panel on Road Safety and agreed to further coordinate their respective initiatives and programmes, in particular, in relation to agreed international actions against the use of telecommunication devices while driving (distracted driving).
